The semantic and pragmatic underpinnings of grammaticalization paths: The progressive to imperfective shift

چکیده
This paper offers an analysis of a robustly attested semantic change in which progressive markers “spontaneously” emerge in languages, become entrenched in the grammatical system, and diachronically generalize by turning into imperfective markers. The pattern is cyclic in that the generalization is often followed by a re-emergence of new progressive markers. The analysis has a semantic component that characterizes the relation between the progressive and imperfective operators as a privative semantic contrast. Its dynamic component rests on the proposal that imperfective and progressive sentences crucially distinguish between two kinds of inquiries: phenomenal and structural inquiries (Goldsmith & Woisetschlaeger 1982). The trajectory — consisting of the recruitment of a progressive form, its categorical use in phenomenal inquiries, and its generalization to imperfective meaning — is modeled within the framework of Evolutionary Game Theory. The diachronic path is reconstructed as a cyclic pattern in which alternative communication strategies rise and fall in dominance over time due to the differences in communicative success and learnability associated with them. * For helpful discussion about content, I thank David Beaver, Cleo Condoravdi, Paul Kiparsky, Sven Lauer, Mokshay Madiman, Maria Piñango, Judith Tonhauser, and the Yale Semantics Reading Group. Issues concerning data, evidence, methods and reasoning in linguistic studies are central topics of contemporary linguistics. The present paper aims to be a contribution to this line of inquiry, discussing the relationship between grammaticalization research and cognitive linguistics and providing a summary of methods and data types used in pragmatically and cognitively oriented grammaticalizat...
متن کاملCross-Cultural Differences and Pragmatic Transfer in English and Persian Refusals
This study aimed to examine cross-cultural differences in performing refusal of requests between Persian native speakers (PNSs) and English native speakers (ENSs) in terms of the frequency of the semantic formulas. Also examined in this study was whether Persian EFL learners would transfer their L1 refusal patterns into the L2, and if there would be a relation between their proficiency level an...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Korean Dative Markers: Its Formal and Cognitive Motivations
This article examines the grammaticalization process of the Korean dative markers -eykey, -hanthey, -tele, and -pwokwo based on the two motivations for grammaticalization. The first motivation, frequency, is explained by providing token frequencies of each marker in the largest historical corpus available in Korean. All four dative markers arose through the highly frequent usages of their sourc...
متن کاملThe Progressive and the Imperfective Paradox the Eventual Outcome Strategy 1 the Motivation for the Eventual Outcome Strategy 3 Dowty's Formulation of the Eventual Outcome Strategy
Formal semantics constitutes the framework of the research presented here, and the aim is to provide a solution to the imperfective paradox; i.e. explain why \Max was running" entails \Max ran", but \Max was running home" does not entail \Max ran home". This paper is divided into two parts. In Part I we evaluate what I will call the Eventual Outcome Strategy for solving the imperfective paradox...
متن کاملA Case Study on the Grammaticalization of GUO in Mandarin Chinese-Polysemy of the Motion Verb with Respect to Semantic Changes
This paper investigates the grammaticalization paths of the motion verb GUO in Mandarin Chinese based on synchronic corpus data. The Mandarin morpheme GUO is shown to have undergone numerous semantic shifts: the spatial GUO through the operation of The Moving Ego Metaphor and The Moving Time Metaphor is initially mapped onto the target domain of temporality. With metaphoric or metonymic extensi...
